to retreat to the comforts of being
soft to the touch like a plum in august
dark and tanned to its purpling nature
ripe to its boundaries now
too bodied to be like the rest
at the stand by the roadside
it waits--
will you stop and choose
the perfect one for today
or will it go on and rot
until purple turns to black,
fresh to freshly carcassed?
